HORSEBACK TRAIL RIDE IN ROMANIA
Indicative itinerary *
Day 1 - Saturday: Arrival in Bucharest in the afternoon, transfer by minibus from Bucharest to the equestrian center, night at the guesthouse, presentation of the week program and dinner.
Day 2 - Sunday: After breakfast, presentation of the horses and allocation of your horse. You leave Şinca Nouă (pronounced Shinca Noah), through valleys and the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, towards the plains of the Olt River Valley. You pass by the “Daffodils Meadow” nature reserve and can already experience several long canters before arriving after about 7 hours at your destination in Mândra, where you stay with a local family.
Day 3 - Monday: You cross the Olt river at Halmeag and continue into the Felmer Valley, where you enter the hills of Transylvania. You ride along a beautiful ridge with a magnificent view of the Fagaras mountains, and reach your destination for the day: Cobor, an old Hungarian village in the middle of the Saxon region. In Cobor, your hosts manage a conservation project, which includes the development of an organic farm with a focus on biodiversity and the traditional restoration of abandoned houses. You spend the night in one of these old guesthouses for the next two nights.
Day 4 - Tuesday: Full day ride (6 hours) around Cobor with stunning views, fast gallops, and rich birdlife: You can definitely spot bee-eaters, hoopoes, great gray shrikes, wild cats and eagles. In the late afternoon, return to Cobor and riders can relax near the old stables or at the cellar bar.
Day 5 - Wednesday: Depart for another day, riding over the hills to Viscri, your destination for the following night. Viscri is probably the most famous village in Transylvania, with a magnificent fortified church. The Mihai Eminescu Trust, created to help persecuted scholars before the fall of the Berlin Wall under the dictatorship of President Ceausescu, has contributed to the restoration of the village. You stay in an old farm converted into guest rooms and enjoy traditional Saxon cuisine. In the evening you can explore the village.
Day 6 - Thursday: In the morning you explore the fortified church of Viscri, visit the local blacksmith (who still works by hand with old charcoal bellows) and have lunch before setting off on horseback. In the afternoon, you cross the hills to a log house on a large meadow, in the forest near the village of Jibert. Magnificent landscapes and superb canters all along the trail. Today, it's a rather quick but shorter trip. In the evening: an excellent dinner and you can enjoy the country atmosphere of Transylvania.
Day 7 - Friday: Today is your last day on horseback, with plenty more galloping over hills and through forests. Finallly you arrive in the Olt valley, take a nice walk along the ridge through old pastures, and descend through oak forests to Halmeag, where your trail ride ends. You enjoy a barbecue and a bus takes you back to the equestrian center.
Day 8 - Saturday: After breakfast, transfer to Bucharest.
