HORSEBACK TRIP IN MONGOLIA
INDICATIVE ITINERARY *
Day 1: Welcome in Mongolia ! Your English speaking translator is waiting for you at Ulan Bator airport at at 7:50 am or 9:20 am (arrival of Turkish Airlines flight, time depending on season). No lunch included. Immediate departure for the Mongolian Steppe! A short 1h30 drive takes you to the endless plains dotted with the yurts of the nomadic herders. The first herds of horses roaming free cross the road in front of your vehicle. Here you are, in Mongolia ... For this first night in Mongolia, you will sleep in a yurt camp in the wilderness (up to 4 riders per yurt - showers in a separate building).
Days 2 to 6: Horse riding trail in the Mongolian steppes. 5 days on horseback in the typical lanscapes of Central Mongolia. For this ride, we have selected the horses of a breeder who takes part to many Naadam races (he is a member of the Mongolian Equestrian Federation). His horses are fast and endurant even all of them are not always race horses. Guided by a nomadic herder, with the help of your English speaking translator, you will ride through steppes, hill and valleys, together with small mountains covered with larch forests. That's the Mongolia you have been dreaming of ... Many nomadic families live in this region, with their yurts and their herds of horses, cattle, goats and sheep. You will have the opportunity of discovering their traditional way of life. You will camp close to a nomadic family at least one night during the ride. The pace of the ride is quite fast, as the support vehicle carries all the luggage and joins the group for lunch and at the end of the day. You do not have to carry anything on your horse, which allows long and fast gallops in this very open terrain. Dinners and nights in tents. We chose the camping sites carefully, once in the middle of nowhere in huge steppes, another night close to a river, another night in the forest where we often hear wolves, and one night close to a nomadic family.
Day 7: End of the horse ride - Ulan Bator. Last half day on horseback in this beautiful part of Mongolia. Picnic lunch. Transfer to Ulan Bator, the rest of the afternoon is dedicated to shopping downtown, where you will find traditional clothing and objects of daily life. In the late afternoon, you will attend a show with traditional dances, music and songs from Mongolia, especially the amazing Khoomei. No dinner included, to let you choose among the varied dining opportunities offered by Ulan Bator. Night at Dream hotel or similar (2* - twin or triple room).

You must be able to ride and control your horse in large spaces at a walk, trot and canter, to trot or canter suspended for long distances. And to be in good physical condition. Maximum weight: 95 kg.
GUIDE:
Professional guide. The guide speaks English.
HORSES:
Mongolian horses.
TACK: The saddles are especially made for the rides n Mongolia, which fit both Mongolian horses and riders. They are based on a short wooden tree to respect the back of the horse. On the rider side, a large cushion ensures comfort, and two arches allow better stability in front and behind. The quarters are very long to protect the rider's leg.
ACCOMMODATION:
5 nights in camping tents in bivouacs, 1 night in a yurt with 2 to 5 beds, 1 night in a hotel in Ulan Bator.
The bivouacs:
Every evening, we find the logistics vehicles and we set up our bivouac in the middle of nature. Everyone sets up their own tent (individual tent provided at no extra charge for single people on request before departure).
We provide Decathlon tents for 1 or 2 people. Couples entitled to a tent for 3 pers. so that you can sit comfortably. For more privacy, we can provide individual tents free of charge at no extra cost (to be reserved before departure and subject to availability). The mattresses are particularly thick for your comfort.
A large mess tent, with tables and chairs, hosts meals and moments of conviviality.
The logistics vehicle also brings tables and chairs for the picnic lunch (except in certain isolated areas such as Naiman Nuur Park where we use pack horses or yaks).
A shower tent is also provided.
The yurt camp:
You will sleep in traditional yurts (called gers in Mongolia), furnished with beds for 1 person (from 2 to 5 beds / yurt), a small table and a stove. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to have individual yurts in most camps, so you should be prepared to share your yurt with other travelers in the group. Some camps offer yurts with a double bed, but their availability cannot be guaranteed. You will find showers, sinks and toilets in a common building. A restaurant provides breakfasts and meals. Yurt camps are the most comfortable accommodation available in Mongolia, but don't expect anything luxurious: hot water in showers is often unpredictable, electrical standards are quite "original", and food in restaurants depends on difficult supply conditions in these remote areas.
Hotel in Ulan Bator:
You are staying in a 3 or 4* hotel. Several hotels are used depending on availability. Always in the city center: to be able to enjoy the many possibilities offered by the capital, do your shopping at the Department Store which is open late at night, and allows you to have a wide choice of restaurants.
MEALS:
On the bivouacs, meals are taken at the camps and prepared by the assistance team.
Filtration pumps to purify water used for cooking. In addition: tablets of Micropur Forte which eliminates viruses and bacteria in 30 minutes. In addition, part of the food is vacuum-packed before departure in order to optimize its preservation during the trip.
Among nomadic families, meals are served either in the family yurt, or outside if the weather permits. Your hosts prepare traditional Mongolian dishes.
In Ulan Bator, meals are taken in the restaurant (free, not included in the price).
LUGGAGE TRANSPORT:
By support vehicle. The logistics vehicle also brings tables and chairs for the picnic lunch (except in certain isolated areas such as Naiman Nuur Park where we use pack horses or yaks).
2025 PRICE PER PERSON:

Perfect welcome, attentive service, available guides. Puujee (the translator) was very competent and pleasant. The whole team was very friendly. No downsides or problems to report.
We always felt safe.
The horses don't have names. The relationship with horses is very different from what we know at home. Without it being a criticism, we can sometimes regret that the equipment is not as suitable as at home (e.g. the straps are very thin and without protection and can sometimes hurt the horses). However, we are aware that this is the way of doing things and the equipment of the country (and that we cannot expect sheepskin protection around the straps!!).
The saddles are very basic, but the cushion allows you to sit comfortably.
For a ride in tents, the comfort was very good. The meals were excellent and varied; the cook (and his team) very competent.
It should be noted that we were able to have individual tents (some originally designed for 2 or 3 people). I suggest that each participant can have a 3-person tent which provides appreciable comfort (allows you to put your suitcase and other belongings in the tent). A three-person tent does not take up much extra space compared to a two-person tent. Offering this costs almost nothing more for the organizer and allows - especially in case of rain (which fortunately we did not have) - a little additional comfort which is appreciable.
Overall satisfaction: No comments; everything was perfect.
Cap Rando services: Perfect; thank you for this non-intrusive follow-up (we did not receive hundreds of emails) but very effective.
The presentation was clear and corresponds perfectly to what we had during the stay.
I do not see any improvement; we returned from our trail ride in Mongolia fully satisfied and happy with this experience (which we will probably repeat in the future)
