Destination

Horseback riding in altitude Morocco ! Discover remote valleys and villages, sometimes at over 3,000 meters above sea level. You'll depart from a plateau overlooking the village of Tahannaout, located on the edge of the Toubkal Natural Park. Splendid views of the deep, steep-sided valleys. Passages along trails frequented only by the local Berber mountaineers. Some crossings on foot are inevitable. The mountainsides are covered with aromatic plants (thyme, lavender, rosemary, etc.) and numerous varieties of flowers and rocks. The houses in the villages (douars) nestled on these mountainsides are built of stone and clay, often with cob roofs. They gradually appear as you approach, immersed in the colors of the terrain. After the hike, you can explore the main historical and cultural sites of the city of Marrakech as well as mingle with the lively crowds wandering through the medina, the souk or the famous Djemâa el Fna square.

Programme intro

HORSEBACK TRAIL RIDE IN MOROCCO
INDICATIVE ITINERARY *

Day 1: Day 1: Arrival in Morocco. Welcome at Marrakech airport, transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Tahannaoute-Sidi Fares
After breakfast, transfer by taxi or minibus to the village of Tahanaout. Meet the trekking team and assign horses. Each rider prepares their horse, and you begin the trek along a forest trail in the Toubkal Natural Park. A forest of cedar, pine, and juniper trees, the few openings of which offer the first panoramic views of the Oukaïmeden mountain range, which precedes the Toubkal mountain range. Stop by a river near the village of Moulay Brahim. In the afternoon, your route follows fruit tree crops (apple, apricot, etc.). Then, the trail gains altitude, and after passing several small, characteristic villages, we arrive at Sidi Fares to enjoy the magnificent view of the Haouz plain. Overnight stay in a lodge or at a local house.

Day 3: Sidi Farès-Ouaneskra.
A winding path leads you to the summit of Oukaimeden. Crossing a pass at 2,668 m (8,668 ft), you'll discover Morocco's second largest ski resort, currently occupied by herds of goats and sheep. You'll stop at a small café in the resort for lunch. Before heading out again, you can admire some rock carvings. In the early afternoon, you'll enjoy a succession of trots and gallops to the Tizi Eddi pass at 2,928 m (9,628 ft). This is where you'll discover the entire Toubkal mountain range with its snow-capped peaks, all the green valleys, and its villages at over 3,000 m (9,800 ft). A breathtaking panorama... A mule track takes us to the villages of Tamguist and Ouaneskra. Overnight at a lodge.

Day 4: Ouaneskra-Tizyane.
Another beautiful day on horseback in the heart of the high valleys of the High Atlas. You ride along the Iminane Valley to the Tamatirt Pass at 2,300 m. The panoramic views are 360° over both valleys. Descend via a mule track to the village of Imlil. Picnic in the valley. The afternoon begins with a somewhat steep climb to the Tizi Mezzik Pass at 2,664 m.
Then the trail crosses a forest of thuriferous juniper trees (an endangered species due to excessive felling), then descends to one of the most beautiful valleys in the Toubkal Massif: the Azaden Valley. You pass the village of Tizi Oussem and arrive at the village of Tizyane. Overnight stay with a local house.

Day 5: Tizyane-Ouirgane.
In the morning, enjoy the magnificent scenery and follow the forest trail along the valley towards the village of Ouirgane. Enjoy a picnic in Tassa Ouirgane. In the afternoon, descend to Ouirgane. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: Ouirgane-Imgouiza.
You follow the Nfis wadi, passing through deep gorges, before leaving the wadi and reaching the Kik plateau. The landscape changes completely, with dry-stone villages scattered amidst a lunar landscape. Overnight stay at a lodge.

Day 7: Imgouiza-Tahanaoute. A short day that takes you through several hills and villages built of stone or dry earth, with typical Berber architecture, but almost deserted due to the drought. Late morning, descend via a small trail to the Ghiraia Valley where you'll stop for a picnic. In the afternoon, you'll reach Tahanaout, the end of the hike, via the trail through forest landscapes of red juniper and holm oak.

Day 8: End of your horseback riding tour in Morocco after breakfast. Transfer to Marrakech airport and return flight.
