Between sea, hills and mountain:
The Provence, is bordered by the Alps to the north, and the Mediterranean to the south, it stretches from the Rhône river in the west to the Italian border in the east. An ideal location for exploring varied landscapes on horseback in the sunniest region of France: more than 300 sunny days per year in Provence !
The sea:
The Camargue, with an area of more than 930 km2 (360 mi2), is the largest river delta in Western Europe: an island in a way, because it is entirely surrounded by water between the Mediterranean, Petit and Grand Rhône. It is a vast plain composed of large lagoons or brine ponds, cut off from the sea by sandbanks and surrounded by marshes covered with reeds which are themselves surrounded by a large cultivated area. It is home to over 400 species of birds, with brine ponds being one of the few European habitats for the flamingo. The Camargue is known for the breeding of horses and bulls. The Camargue is the land of horses in Provence !
The hills and mountain:
The Mont Ventoux, at 1909 meters, is the highest peak in Provence. It is located in the Vaucluse. To the north, the mountain borders the department of Drôme. It is nicknamed the "Giant of Provence", or "Bald mountain". Although geologically part of the Alps, it is often considered separate, due to the lack of mountains of similar height nearby. It is located north of the Luberon massif, and east of the Dentelles de Montmirail: its buttresses. The top of the mountain is bare limestone with no vegetation or trees. The white limestone on the bare peak of the mountain means that it looks like snow from afar all year round (its snow cover actually lasts from December to April).
The Luberon, is a natural park, a low mountain range which stretches from east to west between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Vaucluse, and which includes three "mountains": the eastern Luberon, the Grand Luberon and the Petit Luberon . It is home to an exceptionally diverse flora and fauna as well as an architectural and landscape heritage of great value.
The climate of Provence is Mediterranean. A mild and temperate climate.
Summer: Temperatures most often exceed 30 ° in the middle of the day. The nights are pleasant, around 20 °.
Winter is the cold season, and is often sunny. Average temperatures are 10 to 15 °.
Spring and autumn, rains are sometimes abundant in early spring and late autumn, but generally short.
The best seasons for equestrian holidays in Provence are: spring, summer and fall. In spring, the almond trees start blooming in February, the other fruit trees in April and May. In summer, choose the mountain rides to enjoy the Provence herb fragrances and the sound of cicadas, or the the Meditarrean coast in Camargue. Fall is very pleasant in Provence, until the end of October: a generally very mild month.
